Dolly Rebecca Parton was born on January 19, 1946, in Sevier County, Tennessee, the fourth of twelve children in a family that was poor by any measure and rich in every way that stayed with her. Her father could not read or write. Her mother sang. She started performing before she was ten and moved to Nashville the day after she graduated high school, arriving with a guitar and ambitions that turned out to be completely accurate predictions of what was coming.

What came was one of the most remarkable careers in American music. The less obvious part is that she wrote almost all of them herself, which was not common for women in country music when she started, and she insisted on it anyway.

The Imagination Library

In 1995, Dolly Parton started a program in Sevier County, Tennessee called the Imagination Library. The idea was simple: send a free, age-appropriate book every month to every child from birth to age five, regardless of their family's income. She funded it herself at first. It grew. By the time she passed, the Imagination Library was operating in the United States, Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom, and Ireland, and had sent over 200 million books to children who might not otherwise have had them.

She started it because of her father. He could not read. She understood what that cost a person, and she decided to do something about it in the most concrete way she could find: put books in children's hands before they even started school. The Imagination Library is the program she was most proud of. It is also, by any reasonable measure, among the most significant literacy programs ever created by a private individual.
