Maulana Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273), simply referred to as Rumi, was a 13th century Persian poet, Islamic dervish, and Sufi master. Born from a long line of Islamic jurists, theologians, and mystics, including his father, he is regarded as one of the greatest spiritual masters and poetical intellects. Rumi made use of everyday lifes circumstances to describe the spiritual world. A pivotal event in Rumis life was the meeting of Shams Tabriz, a dervish God-man. Though accounts of their meeting and friendship differ, Shams eventually disappeared and through his mourning, Rumi was led to the outpouring of more than 40,000 lyric verses, including odes, eulogies, quatrains, and other styles of Eastern-Islamic poetry. Eventually, Rumi made peace with the loss believing Shams to be a part of him: His essence speaks through me. In recent years, Rumis poems have acquired immense popularity beyond national and ethnic borders, especially among the Persian speakers of Afghanistan, Iran, and Tajikistan. Numerous poems written by the great poet have been translated to different languages and shared throughout the world.
