To the early twentieth-century traveler, a Canadian holiday by train meant a luxurious escape. State-of-the-art locomotives ran to iconic destinations and emerging tourism hotspots, some of which would have been difficult to access prior to the arrival of the rails. By the time many of the posters in this calendar were designed, cars and planes had usurped the appeal of the train. Nonetheless, the Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways kept churning out posters. They were intent on drawing passengers not only to their trains, but to their hotels and steamship lines. While their posters often featured locomotives speeding down their tracks, they just as often advertised Canada itselfits waterways, wild vistas, and summer and winter recreational opportunities

During the golden age of rail travel, a wealthy traveler could book an entire itinerary, from Liverpool to the Rockies, through a single rail company that operated not only luxury trains, but also steamships and hotels. By the mid-1920s, two companies came to dominate transcontinental rail travel in Canada: Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railways. These companies advertised their access to charming lakeside villages and mountain retreats in the wilderness, hoping to entice Americans to head north and Europeans to venture across the Atlantic. Outdoor sports and recreation, and celebrations such as Indian Days, were also popular subjects. They even promoted southbound travel to special events such as the 1933 Worlds Fair in Chicago. Though often little is known about the artists who created these posters, they remain as idyllic pictures of a bygone era.
