As a child growing up on a farm, Robert Bissell (American, b. England 1952) immersed himself in the world of animals. His paintings of contemplative bears and other creatures in idyllic landscapes invite us to step into their world to see ourselves, once again, as part of nature. "Animals used to be involved with humans as messengers with magical functions," Bissell says. "I wanted to restore their role and give them a new voice." His creatures are fond of standing on two legs, as they are particularly good mirrors of human existence. Their unusual depth of character prompts contemplation of life's transitions and mysteries. Pomegranate also publishes his work in the books Spirit: The Art of Robert Bissell (2019) and Hero: The Paintings of Robert Bissell (2013)

Contemplative and curious, Robert Bissells bears seem to lead lives as complex and thought-filled as those led by humans. Whether making new friends, repairing damage to the earth, or pausing in apparent wonder at natures beauty, the bears draw us in to their surrealistic world. Bissell grew up on a farm in Somerset, England, and retains his love of animals and rural life. His keen interest in visuals began at an early age as he documented life around him through photographs. After studying graphic design and obtaining a masters degree from the Royal College of Art in London, he moved to San Francisco and had a successful career in retail advertising before dedicating himself to painting full-time. He lives in London and regularly exhibits in museums and galleries across the United States and Europe.
