Love, revenge, humor, madness, mistaken identity—the timeless themes of Shakespeare's plays continue to engage audiences more than four hundred years after they were first performed. William Shakespeare (English, 1564-1616) wrote nearly forty comedies, tragedies, histories, and romances. Artists have contributed to the storytelling with their interpretations, and the works in this calendar portray some of Shakespeare's best known and loved characters: Romeo, King Lear, Falstaff, and, of course, Bottom, who wears the head of an ass. Each month presents a few tidbits of Shakespearean lore to accompany the opulent artworks, which are in the collection of the Folger Shakespeare Library. The Folger contains the world's largest collection of materials relating to Shakespeare and his works.

This calendar is perfect as décor in your home, kitchen, or office and easily helps to keep track of important dates, contacts, and other events at a glance. Each calendar month is easy to glance at and see what responsibilities you have coming up, so make sure you stay organized through the year! Personalization is easy with different colors for appointments and trips, add stickers or stickie notes for a quick reference, or create your own system of symbols and abbreviations.

More Info

William Shakespeare (English, 1564–1616), playwright, poet, and actor, wrote nearly forty comedies, tragedies, and histories, alone and in collaboration, that are as relevant to our world as they were to audiences over four centuries ago. Murder, deception, love, and humor never go out of style when the Bard is telling the story. Details of his life and legacy are included with each month, from contemporary developments in Stratfordian scholarship back to the history of the Globe Theatre, where many of Shakespeare’s plays were performed. The Globe even has its own dramatic history, including a fire that burned the theater to the ground in 1613 during a performance of Henry VIII.
