Leighton Poster Calendar: Sir Frederic Leighton was an English painter and sculptor. One of the most famous and successful 19th century British artist, his works mainly depicted ancient Greek and Roman mythology. His first major painting was Cimabue's Celebrated Madonna, this painting was sent to the Royal Academy in 1855 and was bought on the opening day of the exhibition by Queen Victoria for 600 guineas. Leighton was only 25 and his reputation was made. In 1857 he went to Algeria which started a life long fascination with North Africa and the Middle East. In 1860 he moved to London where he associated with the Pre-Raphaelites.
